GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – World Alzheimer’s Month was officially launched in the Cayman Islands by the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association of the Cayman Islands (ADACI) with a photo opportunity on Wednesday, September 4th. The event, held at the historic Heroes Square, was attended by a small group of ADACI’s directors, volunteers, supporters, and members of the International Imperial Beauties (young dementia friends). The theme for this year, set by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), #TimeToActOnDementia #TimeToActOnAlzheimers. The Time To Act focuses on attitudes to dementia and stigma.

The month-long campaign features a variety of events aimed at raising awareness and fostering community support for persons affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Upcoming Events:
- Sunday, September 15th – Praise In Purple: The East End United Church will host the annual “Praise In Purple” service, where attendees are encouraged to wear purple in solidarity. The service will honour caregivers, both family members and professionals, who dedicate themselves to caring for loved ones with dementia.
- Thursday, September 19th, 6:30 p.m. – Community Dementia Awareness Meeting: A public awareness meeting will be held at Constitution Hall, George Town featuring presentations by Dr. Tamas Cseh, Consultant Neurologist at the Health Services Authority (HSA), and Samantha Conolly, Deputy Chairperson and Pharmaceutical Advisor of ADACI. The event will cover the journey of a dementia diagnosis, treatment options, care strategies, and legal considerations for persons who are no longer able to manage their affairs.
- Friday, September 20th – Dress Purple Day: ADACI encourages everyone to “Go Casual for a Cause” by wearing purple to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Purple T-shirts are available for a $15 donation, with proceeds supporting ADACI’s initiatives. For T-shirts, call 924-4170 or 936-1655. Supplies are limited.
- Saturday, September 21st – World Alzheimer’s Day Celebration: Seniors are invited to a “Day of Joy and Wellness” at the South Sound Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include sessions on spiritual wellness, arts and crafts, games, and self-care activities such as mini manicures and massages. Entertainment and lunch will be provided. As space is limited, attendees are asked to confirm their attendance by calling 924-4170 or 936-1655.
- Thursday, September 26th, 6:30 p.m. – North Side Community Dementia Awareness Meeting: This meeting will be held at the North Side Community Centre and will feature presentations by Dr. Sunku Guptha, Consultant Physician General (Internal) Medicine at Health City Cayman Islands, and Samantha Conolly of ADACI. The discussion will focus on dementia prevention, treatment, and necessary legal preparations for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
The month will conclude with an appreciation evening dedicated to caregivers, recognising their commitment and compassion in supporting individuals affected by dementia. This event is by invitation and on a first-come, first-served basis.
