As September marks the annual observance of World Alzheimer’s Month, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This year’s theme is “Never Too Early, Never Too Late, Reduce The Risk” which emphasises the significance of taking proactive steps to mitigate the growing impact of dementia worldwide.
According to the Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), the number of individuals living with dementia is projected to skyrocket, reaching a staggering 139 million by the year 2050. This alarming projection highlights the urgent need for global attention and action to address this public health crisis. Equally significant is the revelation that nearly 40% of these cases can be potentially reduced through risk reduction strategies and early intervention.
World Alzheimer’s Month provides a vital platform to:
- Raise Awareness: The campaign aims to increase public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia’s impact on individuals, families, and communities. It underscores the importance of understanding the risk factors associated with dementia and how they can be managed.
- Promote Early Intervention: Early detection and intervention can make a substantial difference in the progression of dementia. Encouraging regular cognitive assessments and medical check-ups can help identify potential cognitive decline and enable timely interventions.
- Highlight Risk Reduction: There are several modifiable risk factors associated with dementia, including physical inactivity, smoking, healthy eating, excessive alcohol consumption, infrequent social contact, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and hearing impairment. Reducing these risk factors through lifestyle changes can significantly lower the risk of developing dementia.
- Promote Inclusivity and Support: Individuals living with dementia and their caregivers need access to resources, support, and a dementia-friendly society that enables them to live fulfilling lives. This month is an opportunity to champion the rights and dignity of those affected by dementia.
This World Alzheimer’s Month, we call on governments, healthcare organisations, communities, and individuals to unite in the fight against dementia. By taking proactive measures to reduce the risk of dementia and support those living with the disease.
