September is World Alzheimer’s Month. #KnowDementia #KnowAlzheimers is the campaign theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2022. The campaign this year focuses on post-diagnosis support. Following recent developments and potential breakthroughs, in dementia treatment and support, the campaign will highlight the importance of support for people living with dementia, and families following a diagnosis.
ADACI joins the global voice by bringing awareness to the community about Alzheimer’s and other dementias and encourages families to see early diagnosis for their loved ones.
On September 1st a Memory Cafe was held at the Elmslie United Church Hall. This was a well-attended event in collaboration with the Department of Children and Family Services. Memory Cafes are a fun and sociable event for persons with early or moderate stage Alzheimer’s or any other form of dementia along with care partners or caregivers. Activities and entertainment range from singalongs, storytelling, chair exercises, and arts and crafts. All cafes are only two hours long and end with a light lunch being served.
As the month progressed, an information desk manned by volunteers was set up on the breezeway of Foster’s at Camana Bay on September 4th. Volunteers handed out flyers on upcoming events, services provided by ADACI, and infographics on the 10 warning signs and 12 risk factors. On September 10th another information desk was set up at Health City, East End. Persons coming to the hospital were able to stop by the desk to gather information about ADACI, and its services and receive relevant information on how to record symptoms prior to seeing their doctor if they are worried about their memory. Persons also signed up to become volunteers with ADACI.
Two Board Members of ADACI attended the Golden Age Home in West Bay to do activities with the residents on Saturday 17th September. This was a very welcoming and fun event. The 18 residents enjoyed the hats that were made with them to be worn at a Tea Party on a later date.
Sunday 18th September, Pastor Rohan Forrester welcomed ADACI’s board members and family caregivers to a Praise in Purple church service at the East End United Church. An excellent presentation by Samantha Conolly, Deputy Chair of ADACI, spoke about the signs and risk factors of dementia and the importance of early diagnosis along with receiving the right care and support. The church service was followed by a luncheon in honour of ADACI’s board members and the caregivers.
